update: comment replies & snail mail address

April 14, 2009 - 5:04 pm - GMT

comments & replies

My sincere thanks to everyone who gave me input on the questions in the previous post. Your kind advice and support are very much appreciated, and I’ve left replies to all of your wonderful comments in the previous thread.

Going forward, I’ll be doing a lot less reply writing. I am hoping for the day when things are less hectic and I can re-evaluate that decision, but for now this is how it needs to be. Be assured, it is a time management necessity rather than a lack of desire or appreciation.

I will, as always, be reading every comment. I always love what you have to say.

snail mail address change

my snail mail address has changed - I’ve exchanged physical mail with some of you - so if you would, please check the contact page for the new address and update your records -

Thanks again & sending best energy!

a question for my dear readers

April 9, 2009 - 1:54 pm - GMT

Today I’d like to presume upon your kindness to posit a question
amidst my ramblings.

First - a bit of preamble:

I am in the process of doing some reorganization
in my work and personal life
in an effort to better manage my time, get my work
done, and get enough sleep, exercise, etc., to be healthy.

I am currently blessed by a large abundance of work projects,
along with the creative energy to fuel them
which is of course indescribably wonderful,
and my non-work life is no less abundant,
perhaps even more so.

And so I began making stepwise adjustments to my time
commitments a couple of months ago, and
I’m continuing to do so.

I’ve been thinking about the blog a great deal. I really
like blogging, it has fueled an unexpected expansion
in my work, and I’ve met this wonderful community
(you all) that I get to interact with; I am strongly motivated
to try and find a way to keep doing it.

So this is where is where you and my questions come in.

How do you all feel about getting replies to your wonderful comments?

Would you stop commenting if I were to reply to your comments
only occasionally, or perhaps not at all?

I always read and will continue to always read every comment on the blog.
I love them. It is so wonderful to hear what you all think,
and I appreciate your words here so very much.

But, if I stop doing replies to comments it will put just a bit
more time into my week, and that is a precious commodity for me,
at least right now.

And I realize that not doing replies isn’t going to save me
hours & hours every week. It will be a small get.

But my experience is that it really is the small changes
that often add up to the biggest results in my life.

Making changes (for me) isn’t usually about gargantuan
journeys (but of course, I’ve been there too)
rather, change seems to come from small increments that
adjust the arc of my path by just
a degree or two
and pretty soon, that tiny increment has me
traveling in a whole new sphere.

So, I’m thinking to make this ‘no comment reply’ change to
my bloggy habits. And if you have a moment or two
to let me know what you think about that
your time and words would be most appreciated.

A Little Hiatus & a Little Something to Contemplate

March 31, 2009 - 3:57 pm - GMT

The Pedestrian Crossing will be on hiatus for a little bit while Kayt catches up with some off-line stuff.

I’ll leave you with a quote I’ve been contemplating for a few days since I read it. Maybe you’ll find it interesting as well.

“…Even if only 2% of those assigned to perform military service should announce their refusal to fight…governments would be powerless, they would not dare send such a large number of people to jail.”

Albert Einstein

from his speech at the
New History Society
December 14th, 1930

I had known that Einstein grew increasingly more steadfast in his pacifism over his lifetime, but I was previously not aware of how outspoken he was about resistance to military service.

I find this quote, and what it advocates, to be very thought provoking. It has stuck in my mind since I read it a couple of days ago and, I don’t know if I agree or disagree with the recommendation. There seem to be valid points on all sides of the issue, and I think it certainly merits further reflection and consideration—especially as we find ourselves in very volatile times, much as was the case when Einstein delivered this speech.

Book recommendation: Einstein - His Life and Universe, by Walter Isaacson. Isaacson does an incredible job of making complex topics understandable, and the writing is just excellent in this comprehensive book. It is a very engaging read on all levels.

I’ll be back to regular posting soon.  :) for everyone ’till then!

scrabble tag - how we spread the love of writing

February 10, 2009 - 7:10 pm - GMT

Done -All Fixed :-)
Tech Note:
the side bar listing ‘poetwitter’ goes to the correct place for poetwist, and the name will get fixed soon. The long boring story has to do with the blog migration to a new server last week, and server file permissions, ftp, zzzzz zzz zz zzz zzzzz zzzz…Thanks for your patience ;-)

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I was tagged by the diversely talented Lauri Kubuitsile, at Thoughts from Botswana. It’s called Scrabble Tag and here are the rules:

List at least five things you do to support and spread a love of the written word, then tag five people. (If you list something that touches youngsters, you get a bonus letter!)

O.K. - I’ll give this a try:

1. I buy books. I buy books directly from authors (at readings, or when they are in pre-sales promotion, etc.), and I buy them from bookstores, off websites, and yes from/through Amazon. I buy books because I love them. And I buy books hoping the percentage going to the author helps them keep writing. I buy books because it is a tangible way I can show a writer who I do not know and may never meet that what they do has tremendous value.

2.  I read as many writers blogs as I can keep up with and comment on the work. My hope is that through community building of this kind, we can offer each other support and encouragement. And maybe such support can help keep us writing through the days when we feel like quitting.

3. I support local writing programs by taking classes and actively promoting same to every writer I can find. And I support local arts organizations presenting writers for lecture series by buying tickets and attending the events.

4. I join local arts and writing organizations that provide funding, grants & other resources to writers and artists. When I can, I donate $$ beyond the membership dues to help fund grant programs etc.

5. I am leading a not so secret double-life as ‘poetwist‘ where I toss out single words as prompts for tweets, simply because it is fun and beautiful to write and interact with other writers in this way on twitter. And I’m using my blog to link back to a selection of these twitter micro-writings (periodically) to share this work with a wider/different audience. btw - some darn wonderful writing is happening on twitter, and a lot of word muscle is showing - few things more beautiful to me than that :-)

O.K. who to tag…

Thanks for tagging me Lauri - this was fun to think about!

twitter name change

February 6, 2009 - 5:08 am - GMT

Sadly, I had to change my twitter name just now. There was a technical issue with ‘twitter’ being part of the old name.

But nothing has changed except the screen name and URL.

I’m now- poetwist -and all the same stuff is there and will continue.

Don’t forget to update your URLs and any links you have going to the site, it is now http://twitter.com/poetwist

And the new name is a couple of chars shorter, which is great for @reply stuff and typing :-)

All good!

Note - The Pedestrian Crossing is undergoing some maintenance on Friday Feb. 6, 2009 (GMT). If you leave comments on Friday or after and don’t see them, or notice anything that seems broken - just let me know via the contact page and we’ll get it sorted out post haste. If all goes as planned you won’t even notice - let’s keep the faith on that ;-)
